where is the best scuba diving in the world during September and October?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

I have about 5 weeks available for diving during late September, mid-October. What is the absolute best diving location for visibility, underwater terrain, sea life?

If you don’t mind the colder temperatures, I feel that diving the coast of Southern California is some of the best in the world. In addition, that period of time is some of the warmest in the Southern California waters. The kelp forests are suburb, the amount of sea life is astounding, and before the winter storms hit ,the visibility can be outstanding. The fish are not as colorful as in say Hawaii, but that is made up for by the sheer magnitude of numbers you will find in the kelp. Just imagine being able to dive in a large forest from the floor of the forest to the tree tops and that is what it is like to dive in a kelp forest. The sunlight filters down the same way and you will never find anything like it anywhere else. I do recommend, going with a group or person who can instruct on how to dive in the kelp. There is a technique all to itself, but you will have a great time. The link at the bottom has a couple of pictures of diving in a kelp forest.

In regards to scuba diving, where is the cut off between warm and cold water diving?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Is there a specific temperature, or is it relative to the people/person diving?

If you’re talking about personal comfort, I always say, cold is relative to what you’re wearing. I’ve dived 15°C in a two-piece semi-dry plus hood, but that was uncomfortable. Now I use a drysuit for anything under 20°C, and a two-piece with hood for anything up to about 25°C. Divers with lower surface:volume ratios (i.e. more natural insulation!) than me might think that a bit wimpy, but I’d rather be warm than not.

If you’re talking about the risks of regulator freeze-up, I would say ‘cold’ is anything under about 5°C (41°F), when the cooling effect of depressurising air, added to the low water temperature, might be enough to cause ice to form in/around the moving parts of your second stage. (If you’re diving in water that cold, your first stage should be environmentally-sealed.)

What is stopping FIFA from stamping out Diving altogether?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Surely in the world of technology, it cannot be hard to review a dive in soccer? What is stopping FIFA from stamping out Diving altogether?
Is it because its part of the "entertainment" , like an actor in a movie?

FIFA doesn’t want to use replays because they say it would stop the game too much. Diving is illegal, it’s just hard to catch. Many teams have suggested putting in Official Replays, for things like whether or not a ball went over the line, where a tackle happened, hand balls, diving etc. but FIFA again doesn’t want to ruin "constant" football. However teams can request to overturn decisions after the game, like cards and such.

What are some career choices that involve diving?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I’ve considered marine biologist for my career once, but I heard from a very wise man that it would be a bad choice (don’t ask the reason). Any cool diving jobs out there?

If you’re a really good swimmer as well you could be a Coast Guard rescue/recovery diver but this would take a lot of training in multiple areas besides just the diving that you’d have to do.

You could also be a scuba instructor, like a person who does scuba certification classes but this would also require some pretty intense first-aid training just like the Coast Guard would have you do.

But kind of as a sidenote the "very wise man" is absolutely right about not doing marine biology: there are so many people that want to go into marine biology that they’re not going to be able to get jobs in the field and they’ll probably end up going into the retail industry and leading rather dissapointing lives (I worked part-time in retail for a while and there are very few incentives to go into that stuff besides the minimum-wage pay)

What is probably the hardest dive you can do in diving?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

You know the sport called diving? It is a really hard sport! What is the hardest dive?

on Springboard the highest possible difficulty dive is the
3 meter 409C Inward 4 ½ Somersault at 4.2 dd but ive never seen it done. The next is the 5339D Reverse 1 ½ Somersault 4 ½ Twister dive off of a 3 meter board at 3.7 dd. The inward 405B 1 & 3 meters dive Pagglio mentioned is the one youre more likely to see someone actually do though unless youre at a major diving event. the link to the FINA dd dive chart is below.

There are several 10 meter tower (platform)dives that are 3.7 dd and in general Tower or "Platform" diving is the more dangerous to dive.

How do you qualify for a diving event in the 2012 Olympic Games?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I am interested in taking up diving and I think it would be awsome to go to the Olympics as I have always dreamed.
I know it’ll be hard work and perhaps i’ll need to train longer than 4 years and i might have to hold out until the 2016 Olympics.
But does anyone have;
*Information
*Websites
*Anyone a current or former diver

THANKYOU SO MUCH!

In the United States, in order to qualify for the Olympic Team, you have to attend the Olympic Team Trials. This usually occurs in late june and the Olympic Team has a camp in July and selects the members.

I used to be a junior national diver (under 18). If you are under 18, you can still compete in the Junior National competitions that are held throughout the year. In the summer, is regionals (10 regions), then zones (5), then nationals. The divers that I saw this Olympics I once competed against in the 18 and under category, but they usually dominated the competition, so they also dive at the Senior Level. Senior divers can qualify for the Olympics and their age ranges usually are between 16 and 28. Students that are 18 and over usually dive both in college and for the Senior Level. Colleges known for great diving programs include Indiana, Texas, Georgia, Iowa.
