How do you qualify for a diving event in the 2012 Olympic Games?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I am interested in taking up diving and I think it would be awsome to go to the Olympics as I have always dreamed.
I know it’ll be hard work and perhaps i’ll need to train longer than 4 years and i might have to hold out until the 2016 Olympics.
But does anyone have;
*Information
*Websites
*Anyone a current or former diver

THANKYOU SO MUCH!

In the United States, in order to qualify for the Olympic Team, you have to attend the Olympic Team Trials. This usually occurs in late june and the Olympic Team has a camp in July and selects the members.

I used to be a junior national diver (under 18). If you are under 18, you can still compete in the Junior National competitions that are held throughout the year. In the summer, is regionals (10 regions), then zones (5), then nationals. The divers that I saw this Olympics I once competed against in the 18 and under category, but they usually dominated the competition, so they also dive at the Senior Level. Senior divers can qualify for the Olympics and their age ranges usually are between 16 and 28. Students that are 18 and over usually dive both in college and for the Senior Level. Colleges known for great diving programs include Indiana, Texas, Georgia, Iowa.

What muscles does indoor pool diving work out?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

I’m going into the diving team at my high school. Never done it before and I want to know which muscles I should train on my spare time, and also which ones the sport itself works out.

Shoulder muscles are very important, along with leg muscles. You probably want to do some weight training under the supervision of your coach, although a lot of coaches don’t emphasize this in high school.

You might be interested in the website USADiving.org. If you decide you want to dive year round, look for a swim/dive club in your area. There’s a link for that at the website, or your coach would know about them.

Good luck. And don’t get discouraged if it seems as if your not making fast progress. It takes a while to learn all the intricacies of diving, but it’s a sport that’s a lot of fun, both to do and to watch [although as a diver mom those inward dives always made me nervous!].

I want to start in diving. How would I go about doing that?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

I’m a freshman in high school and I have no previous diving experience, unless you count starting dives during competitive swimming and do flips into the pool during practice. I have competed in swimming, but no other aquatic events. I am reasonably fit, because I’ve been doing competitive swimming. I have found a diving center but I am unsure if they will take someone as inexperienced as I. It looks like a lot of fun and something to do in the winter and summer (which is when I’m between seasons).

Just go to http://www.usadiving.org/05redesign/main/index.html to find a club in your area. I’m sure they will be able to help you get started.

We want to dive the best dive sites as well, any advice? Maybe there’s a diving website with previous diver’s advice or tips?

We don’t want to waste our time, we want to dive the most popular dive sites – there are so many!

Maybe there is a certain resort were all the divers stay, and go the dive sites from there?

Please help!

You will know Phuket by yourself and everywhere you need in Phuket. I will take you to another part of Thailand. Try it.

How far out on the diving board would a 69 kg diver have to be?

Monday, October 5th, 2009

How far out on the diving board (Fig. 9-42) would a 69 kg diver have to be to exert a torque of 1210 m·N on the board, relative to the left (A) support post?

Torque is simple really. To get torque you just multiply the force times the distance from where the torque is to be measured. In your problem you are given the torque but need to find the distance. They call this distance the “Moment Arm”.

Step 1:Figure out how much force the guy is applying to the board:

(69 kg) (9.8 m/s2) = 676.2 N

Step 2:Solve for distance (Moment Arm):

(676.2 N) (d) = 1210 N m

d = 1.79m

Hope that made sense!

How do you do a front flip off a 1 meter diving board without landing on your back ?

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Today I decided to try a front flip off a diving board and I landed on my back which hurts really bad. How do you do one without having to land on your back? I can’t jump really jump high and you can only have one bounce per a jump at my pool, so how do you do one?

i used to dive competitively, and it took me a year to learn how to do a front somi (flip) because i always landed on my back whenever i tried so then i became hesitant to do them. once i got the feel for them, they became the easiest thing in the world to do

when you jump, you want to make sure that you jump straight up and not out (this was part of my problem). make sure that you use your arms and as you jump reach straight up with them as if you were touch the sky. as soon as you reach up, you need to throw your arms forward as fast as you can to start the rotation. as youre doing this, bring your knees up to your chest and grab on to your shins. stay in as tight a ball as possible while you rotate. when in doubt, dont worry about kicking out of your tuck and just land the dive as if you are doing a canon ball. once you are comfortable, you will be able to tell when it is time to kick out, and my coach just told us that when we kick out to think of it as standing up out of a chair.

out of all this, i would say the most important part is how fast you throw your arms forward because it controls how fast you will spin.

Where can I get good swimsuits for diving?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

I’m going to start diving again soon, and was wondering where to get good one-piece (duh, ha ha) diving bathing suits?
Thanks! Any other recommendations for things to buy before I start are appreciated!

Swimoutlet.com

I consider it one of the best swim-related stores because of the relatively low prices and wide variety. They have great service as well. I recently just ordered $100 worth of swim gear from them, and one of my goggles were the wrong color, and they immediately shipped me the correct color goggles. They even let me keep the other pair of goggles.
