Oh and how old do you have to be to get certified in nitrox. I can’t remember if it’s 18 or 16.

Pennecamp park in the Florida keys is gerogeous. Been there before plenty of times. Lotsa fishies and reefs. Was nice, clear water when I went there last. : ) I havent been scuba diving for awhile as well. Floridia’s the best place for it.

I am about to sign up at a PADI certified diving place, to learn to scuba dive. I am 14 years old and I need to know that I can become completely open water certified. I would also appreciate anyone that could give me a few websites that I can buy gear from. I would like to purchase all of my own gear, wetsuit, tank, bc, regulators, mask, snorkel, everything. I live in Ohio near Lake Erie and have gone to lake Huron to visit family. I believe both are classified as temperate waters. Any tips possible would be greatly appreciated.

At your age, you’ll be classed as a junior open water diver. There are a few restrictions placed on your diving.
There’s a depth restriction ( I believe it’s 40 feet) and you MUST dive with an adult that is at least open water certified.
Once you hit 15, you automatically gain an adult open water cert, with no extra cost and that will allow you to a depth of 60 feet with a certified adult diver.
Shop around for your course locally. Don’t just go into the first dive shop you see and sign up. Not all dive shops offer excellent training. Find one that you feel comfortable and safe with.
Buying equipment? DON’T do it online. Go to a local shop. You need to try this gear on before purchase. It’s no good to you or even dangerous if it doesn’t fit right. You can’t try stuff on, online. The shop you’re taking your course from will probably offer you a discount. They’d like you to come back. You’ll also get better service for your gear if you buy from a local shop and can be guaranteed that what they sell are not manufacturing defects, damaged or used goods. Online dive shops sell this stuff. Finally, by buying your gear locally, you keep that dive shop in business. That shop is going to be the hub of your world for diving. It’s where you’ll meet other divers and organize trips. If it’s gone you’ll have to start placing ads in newspapers to find dive buddies.

I want to go scuba diving with my parent but I don’t know how old I have to be.

These are the requirements from PADI:

First, everyone that is diving has to be a certified diver (i.e. have a license). If your parent is already certified, then you will have to complete the course before you are allowed to dive.

As to the ages:

9 years old and younger: PADI has a program called the SEAL Team. This is only pool based stuff.

10 to 11 years old: You can get your Junior Open Water diver certification. At this age, you must dive with a parent, guardian, or PADI professional and go no deeper than 40 feet.

12 to 14 years old: You can get your Junior Open Water diver (same one as above). At this age, you can dive with any certified diver that is of legal age (at least 18 unless defined as older in other countries). The depth limit is 60 feet until you get additional training.

At 15 years old, you are considered an Open Water diver (drop the Junior), and you can dive with any certified diver.

Also, if anyone lives in the Auburn/Grass Valley California area and knows of a great place to learn how to scuba, that would be great help also.

The class usually costs ~$100. You also pay for the boat trips which are about $50. You’ll want to buy your own mask, snorkel, and fins which’ll be about $75. Then there’s equipment rental which is about $30 each time. All told, to get certified, you’re looking at around $400+. What you is lookup some local dive shops and call around. Oftentimes they’ll have package deals which may save you a bit.

Also, be sure to ask what certification you’ll be getting. I’d recommend YMCA or NAUI certification over PADI because you will learn more which equates to becoming a safer diver.

I’m going to start my first scuba diving class on Friday and was hoping i could get some tips first. What mistakes did you make and what should i do to avoid them? That sort of thing would be great. The first class is just going to be a classroom, but the one on Saturday we actually go in the water.

When I first took scuba, the first rule taught was…….BREATHE! It takes a bit of getting used to breathing through a mechanical device. Trivia: Jacques Cousteau invented the on-demand regulator when he was a french resistance fighter in WWII. When I first took class, the first lesson was classroom, the second was laps in a pool to let the instructor see if you could stay afloat safely, then the third was giving you all the equipment, taking it to the deep end, throwing it in and telling you to go in and put it on before you broke surface again (go for the mask and tank)! Good luck

I know that scuba tanks are pressurized to 3000 psi. This is then released by the regulator to a pressure close to the water pressure for breathing. Now refrigeration works by pressurizing a gas, letting it cool down to ambient temperature, and then decompressing it. In the decompression it gets colder. How come the 3000 psi air inside the scuba tank, the pressure used to cool the atmosphere into liquid nitrogen, is not too cold to breathe on decompression?

When you take a breathe from your tank, the high pressure air is converted to medium pressure by the first stage of your regulator (the bit that fits on the tank). The mouth piece transfers this air to your mouth at ambient pressure. If the high pressure air came straight into your mouth, it’d blow your ‘ead off(ish). If you open the valve on a tank (check with the staff that you can waste a tank) fully and leave it to empty a 3000psi tank, once it’s near empty, feel the valve, you’ll find it’s pretty bloody cold, so you’re kinda right that when gases go from high pressure to low pressure (according to Charles’ law:at a constant pressure, the volume occupied by a given quantity of gas decreases as the temperature of the gas decreases (p1v1/t1=p2v2/t2) but the volume of the tank remains unchanged, the temp decreases.
