How do you dive into a swimming pool?

I have tried many times to dive and I either do a belly flop or I get scared and I put my knees up. How do you dive, and how do I train myself to not get scared when I’m in the air?

If you’re really having trouble diving off your feet, you can practice by diving off your knees. Put your knees on the edge of the pool and put your feet flexed behind you with your bottom of your toes on the deck (otherwise you’ll scrape your feet). Then make you arms into a straight, streamlined point and have your body dive in the water by rolling your back. It feels really funny, but it helps.

When you dive on your feet, start off by doing a little jump or no jump so that you don’t go very high or far. Make sure to tuck your head underneath your arms before you hit the water. If you keep belly flopping, make sure your head is down and aim your hands further down and less further out.

As for not getting scared in the air, you’ll just have to practice until you get used to it. Don’t dive from high places until you’re comfortable diving from the pool deck or starting block. (And even then, it’ll still be scary to dive from diving boards. I’ve been swimming – and diving off starting blocks for 10 years and I still was scared to dive off a 3m diving board.)

uggh, this used to happen to me. once I figured it out though I was able to dive extremely deep.

Stand on the edge of the pool with your arms up and hands together, like you’re doing a dive. lol
then make sure that your hands go into the water first; arch your body into the water after your arms.

just practice as much as you can, you’ll get it. it’s like one of those seeing eye pictures

Alright, this is going to be an easy step by step instruction:

    1) Place one hand on top of the other
    2) Keeping your hands together, straighten out your arms and lock your elbows if you can. This position is known as the "streamline" position.
    3) Put your upper arms along your ear or behind your head if you are flexible, and make sure you are in the streamline position.
    4) Now that your arms are in the correct position, bend your knees and launch yourself off the side of the pool. Make sure you are on the deep end, or starting off a diving board or block.
    5) Now here is the trick: While you are in the air, your body’s path will be like an arc. Your hands (since they are in the streamline position) should enter the water first. Just imagine that you are carving a hole into the water with your hands. Then keep your body straight as possible, with your goal being that you can get your entire body through that hole you made with your hands, and not going outside the hole. I know this sounds complicated but its easier to understand when you are out there.
    6) Make sure you remain extended once you hit the water, and do a nice flutter kick to propel you to the surface or any destination you like.

    Hope this helps

the main way to avoid a belly flop is to remember to get your hips above your head. dont lift your head up, push your chin into your chest. with your head down like that, put your arms straight up (almost behind your head) and jump so that your hips end up higher in the air than your head. keep your legs stiff as you enter the water (remember to squeeze your cheeks…no not the face cheeks either) and prepare for impact

the going through one hole thing that someone else mentioned….helps out a great deal
