How long does it take to become a scuba instructor?

I want to get certified as a diver, then eventually become an instructor. I want to move to somewhere in Indonesia and be a scuba instructor for a resort or something.

What steps should I take? Any tips? Any advice from someone who took this path or a similar one?

I got certified in Open Water Diving in February and became and Instructor in September.

there is plenty of programs to do just that. I Have this book, its called Gap Year. It is filled with jobs and adventures. They have scuba training offered by hotels resorts and torist travel things and alot of them train you so you will then work for their resort as a certified diver. you can find some of these programs and internships if you do some googleing

Step 1: Take your Open Water certification.4 days
Step 2: Take the Advanced certification 2 days
Step 3: Rescue Diver 3-4 days
Step 4: PADI Divemaster (STUDY and pay attention. DIVE LOTS) Takes 4-6 weeks depending on where you are.
Step 5: Instructor Developement 2 weeks
Step 6: Instructor Exam 2 days

You need 6 months experience and at least 100 dives to do the exam, do more than that! Also 18yrs old for Divemaster.

PADI is the way to go. They certify more than any other and there are more jobs available for PADI instructors.
