My old IMB Thinkpad that I only used for writing gave me the "blue bird of death". Blue screen with a little white dove, and it kept wanting me to set the clock. Tried that a few times, showed it to a friend, and he said that that meant the motherboard battery was dead. Is there any way I can either take the hard drive out, plug it into another computer, and get the data off of it, or does the computer need a new motherboard? I don’t care about saving the Thinkpad, it was second hand ten years ago. I just want the word documents off the hard drive, if they are still in tact. Just want to know BEFORE i take it to any kind of computer tech, so I’m not getting ripped off.
Oh I think it had Microsoft windows 95 if that info is needed.
Thanks!
Yay thinkpads! Anyhow i wouldn’t take it to anyone, just find someone who knows "anything" about laptops. Its just a few screws to replace that little button battery and that should fix the issue.
If not however, you can remove the hard drive (a few more screws) detach whatever adapter is on it, and connect it to a 2.5" HD to usb adapter as is found here.http://www.sourcingmap.com/usb-sata-ide-hard-drive-adapter-cable-p-12842.html
Generally about $20 for that adapter, from there you just plug the HD into the adapter, and plug the adapter into the computer via usb
yes the hard drive can be conected to another computer or the battery can be replaced

just replace the battery , shoudl be about $1.99 for it, it should be located on the bottom where the memory is located…
if not then you will need to manually configue the system bios and then boot it…

Yes. You should be able to get the info off of your hard drive. All the battery on the motherboard does is keep the time. It shouldn’t really be that tough to put a new battery on the mother board most of them are interchangeable. You do probably want a tech guy to do it for you though, but if you get a new battery it shouldn’t cost any more than like 10 bucks.

unless you want to go to pc world (30£ for data transfer) you could remove the hard drive and get a 2.5 extenal hard drive case
from most computer shops
